Armand van Wijck

– heartfelt harmonica and suling

“Van Wijck has a velvety tone. His beautiful melodies and peaceful music transport you to the vastness of Scandinavia.”– JazzFlits (NL)

Armand plays the chromatic harmonica and suling (Indonesian bamboo flute). His music blends modern European jazz, impressionist colors, and folk influences from Scandinavia and Indonesia, shaped by his Indo-Dutch-Creole background and life as a migrant in Sweden.

Armand’s work explores themes of identity, migration, and belonging. For him, music is a way to share stories and find harmony in cultural diversity. His debut album Nothing to Declare (Howling Jazz, 2024) received widespread acclaim for its atmospheric sound and emotional depth. Orkesterjournalen (SE) described it as ‘very atmospheric folk-jazz... a multi-dimensional sound,’ while JazzViews (UK) wrote: ‘a tightly knit quartet with many beautiful things to say – reminiscent of Jan Garbarek and Bobo Stenson.’

Nothing to Declare is the best album I've heard from Sweden this year so far (April 2024). Extremely successful, bordering on sublime.’ – Ivan Rod (DK)

Armand is an active collaborator across borders. After performing at many venues and festivals in the Netherlands such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, he relocated to Sweden and developed his quartet with top Swedish musicians. In 2024 he toured South Africa in collaboration with local jazz artists and performed in Cape Town to enthusiastic audiences. A follow-up tour is in the works.

'Armand has an incredibly rich and beautiful sound... Cape Town, you’re lucky. Make time to experience the Armand van Wijck Quartet.’ – Brenda Sisane, Kaya FM (ZA)

He also performs in a flourishing folk-jazz duo with Swedish folk violinist Magdalena Eriksson and contributes to electro-acoustic projects such as Johan Björklund’s Pjäxeröd 2.0, featuring artists like Arve Henriksen.

'Armand is an original and acclaimed artist with personal aesthetics and with a warm way of interpreting the music he performs. His mastery on the harmonica, his understanding of the jazz tradition and - not the least - his musically communicative skills are remarkable.' – Anders Jormin, ECM Records artist
