Mathias Landaeus

– adventurous and excellent jazz pianist & composer

“it’s music that liberates—and an album that is a strong contender for Jazz Album of the Year.”

Swedish jazz pianist and composer Mathias Landæus is well known for his adventurous attitude and excellent musicianship. He has released over 20 albums since his record debut in 1996. His output ranges from jazz jazz to electronic and improvised music.

Landæus lived and studied in New York in the 1990’s, immersing himself in the vibrant jazz scene. After returning to Sweden he became an important figure on the Stockholm jazz scene. In addition to his inspiring work as a composer and musician, he has had a crucial role in building community by starting live scenes like the influential Glenn Miller Café in Stockholm, and his ongoing concert series Underground in southern Sweden.

More recently he has initiated the musicians’ network ”Jazz for Climate Justice”. His lyrical touch and original quirky style has earned him a reputation as a world class jazz pianist and improviser. His regular trio with multi awarded rising star drummer Cornelia Nilsson and internationally sought after bass player Johnny Åman, are known for their playful inventiveness and their strong stage presence.

Through the years Landæus has collaborated with numerous artists, continuously expanding his horizon and exploring new expressions. As a composer, visionary leader and master collaborator, his work celebrates connection, imagination and freedom.

Spring 2025 sees Mathias release two disparate piano trio albums on his own label Sfär: “Dissolving Patterns” (with Nina De Heney and Kresten Osgood, March 7) and “Resilience” (with Landæus Trio, May 9).

Praise for “Dissolving Patterns”:

“The instrumental performances of all three musicians are breathtaking!…the piano builds an exquisite lyricism, almost terrifying in its emotional weight…The trio reaches beyond the horizon. A masterpiece!”

The depth and beauty of the ten, non-hierarchical, nuanced, and intimate conversations are simply magical and timeless, and every piece flows with its own labyrinthian, inner logic, and bold imagination and embraces all possibilities. A masterpiece.”
